great tutorial that goes along the lines of the “Nice Introduction” post below. We have some new folks (and maybe even some old folks) that this could be useful to.

Roger that, Houston...
That’s what I’m going to start saying to Steven (a.k.a “Houston”). It just sounds pretty cool and gets the same message across as, “OK, that’s cool” or “Yes, I understand.” And, our set up is very similar to NASA’s. He’s over in his office (a.k.a the control room) pouring over data and providing me info remotely (via Gmail...

It Takes a Genome
I forgot to mention that a new book will be available in the fall by Greg Gibson, called, “It Takes a Genome.” He reviews several human diseases and explains whether the disease is related to our genome. Dr. Gibson is currently working on rural African populations that move to urban areas to test the influence of environment versus genetics in human vulnerability to disease.

Update from SISG
So, I completed the first module, which touched on a lot of interesting topics such as linkage disequilibrium and association mapping.
Today, I am in the module on statistical inference, and so far we have covered Bayesian methods and Monte Carlo Markov Chain parameter estimations.
This class has a lot of interesting people in it, one fellow from Pisa, Italy who works on Urchins; two members of...

Summer Institute on Statistical Genetics
Hello - I thought I would check in this week as I take the Summer Institute hosted by the Biostatistics program here at UW. This institute started 10 years ago at NC State, and has been a great way to get a crash course in a variety of topics related to genetics and technology.
I am starting out the week in the Molecular Genetics module - a basic overview of the theory and techniques involved in...

End of the quarter...
Well, the end of the quarter has arrived. Katie presented her Capstone last week and did a fine job (see her presentation below). Now she is moving on to real life (I think). Cullen will also be departing, but he is simply going to med school, so life will still be the same old distorted reality that is college life. Thinking about this got me thinking about my college days, so I scrounged up a...
