Tuesday Wrap-up
Day 1 of the attempt 2 of the Mercenaria library complete.  If that was not exciting enough today we received our first 2-D gel Mass Spec results.  What could it have been? drum roll….. either human keratin (cross-over) or oyster actin, how exciting. Wednesday we will be shocking some gigases with Vt, and lots of it. Tatyana had no band in her negatives and I imagine soon we will have an...

Why is V. tubiashii bad?
V. tubiashii preys on the oystera and other shellfish larvae in the West coats. This bacteria undermined the Northwest prized oyster suppy, killing billions of young larvar. An explosion of the microbe laster summer shut down an Oregon shellfish hatchery that is one of the largest on the West Coast. So if you are one of those who goes to the restaurant to eat oystes, expect that the prices will go...

Sequencing the expressed genetic information of an ecosystem (metatranscriptome) can provide information about the response of organisms to varying environmental conditions. Until recently, metatranscriptomics has been limited to microarray technology and random cloning methodologies. The application of high-throughput sequencing technology is now enabling access to both known and previously...

At last... mRNA!
OK, check out this picture: For those not “in-the-know” this is a huge success!  This graph (and it’s corresponding values on the right) show both high quality mRNA AND high mRNA yield. FINALLY!!!  The week that our visiting scientist from the MBL (Hi to Jackie, if you’re reading this) we literally performed dozens of attempts at isolating mRNA and got virtually...

Laby Laby
Today I finished up what Rachel started a few days ago, isolating DNA from sick sea fans and drunken Dungan isolates. This was done with Chelax and was followed by a PCR to ultimately ID the type of Labyrinthulida that might exist in said samples. —SR

White pages update
Today we sadly moved the bay scallop over to “other”.  Who took its place? Vt. Plus in a move to either be hip or lazy the Vt page has embedded into it a live research blog (or as I like to say ‘reslogr’).
