Not looking good
In this study both hard clams and bay scallops were exposed to 4 pCO2 conditions that included 250, 390, 750, and 1500ppm.  Larvae were obtained from a local hatchery in New York and cultured in 1 liter beakers at an approximate density of 0.2/ml. Larve were fed T-sio and twice weekly larvae were gently poured onto a 64 um mesh so condition could be assessed and water changed. To discourage growth...

Plant & Animal Genome - Day 1 There were a number of highlights today, not the least of which is a new vocabulary word to put into your nerdy genomic lexicon, ready: isotigs.  Familiarize yourself with this one, it feels like a running theme here already.  For example, Paula Veronese’s talk entitled, ‘The Hidden Transcriptome in Plant-Microbe Interactions’, highlighted the...

Cummings et al. compared an Antarctic bivalve’s physiological response to three pCO2/pH levels corresponding to current Antarctic pH (7.99), pH in the year 2100 (7.78), and Antarctic pH 20,000 years ago (8.32).  Their experiment lasted 120 days and they took mantle tissue for gene expression (HSP70 and chitin synthase, CSH) at day 21.  Hsp70 expression was lowest at 7.99 and relatively...

Dave’s January Goals; Short sweet and to the...
1.     Follow up on Oyster/Cu/Vt project started in class last quarter. Finish qPCR results and begin writing sections of the paper. 2.     Come up with a game plan for the hard clam QPX samples.  This is contingent on obtaining QPX data for the samples we have. 3.     Get some gene expression data from the “tissue immersion” QPX experiment (This didnt have a name before but I’ll just stick to the...
